Holiday Lighting Tips

If you’ve ever tried to make your home look festive for the holidays and found it to be a bit of a wiring nightmare, the first thing you should do is rent the movie “Christmas Vacation” and see how much you relate to the Griswalds. Then, you should come into a Grover Electric and Plumbing Supply and ask for help.

There are safe ways to spruce up your house with lighting for the holidays, and then there’s the “Griswald” way.  (We carry fuses in case you’re kind of a Griswald)

The best way to get those Christmas lights going is with outdoor receptacles. Specifically outdoor GFCI or “Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt”  plug ins. (Sometimes called GFI’s) Keep in mind that moisture and electricity aren’t exactly good friends. A GFCI is designed to trip at any slight detection of current to trip the circuit before a shock becomes lethal. That’s why they’re perfect for outdoor winter use.  If you already have a GFCI then you might want to make sure its working properly. Ask us about GFI testers. They’re easy to use and cost less than $10.

You might also want to make sure you have a safety cover on your outdoor outlet. We have special covers that close around the chord.

One last thing. It’s best not to use an indoor extension chord for outdoor use. Outdoor extension chords are better insulated and better at withstanding the rigors of bad weather.

Now, climb up that ladder and make the neighbors jealous!
