Your Fall Home Checklist … Get Ready For Winter Weather
Sorry to break in here where while you’re admiring all those pretty fall colors but fall does bring on some other things that require our attention. It’s the season where we do some things that we appreciate not having to do later.
First up: Disconnect your hoses from those outdoor faucets before they freeze and break things. It might be a good time to look into some other options for protecting outdoor water supplies as well. We have a few ideas about that.
Second thing: Ceiling fans. They’ve been cooling for the summer (if they’re spinning the right direction) so now its time to reverse them and get them distributing the heat. HERE’S A TIP; dust them before you reverse them or you could end up throwing out a cloud of whatever they’ve been collecting all summer.
Third thing: You’ll be firing up the furnace now. (If you haven’t already!) So this is the time to make sure you’ve got a nice clean furnace filter. We have a big selection of filters to make sure your furnace doesn’t work any harder than it has to this winter.
Last but not least: There’s a lot more darkness now so make sure those outdoor lights are working correctly. If you have a timer on those lights, you’ll want to make sure it’s set to be shining when needed.
Did we just make our to-do list a little longer? It’s what we’re here for.
Tile Floors and Cold Feet
Aren’t those tile floors just a treat for the eye? So stylish, so impressive? Then, on a cold morning, you wake up and trot down the hallway rug and step off on that tile in your bare feet … yikes!! That’s COLD!
Fact is there are several types of flooring that are popular for good reason but darn cold to walk on. Here at Grover Electric and Plumbing Supply we have a product line we’ve recently added that will make you love standing on those floors as much as you love looking at them. It’s the “King Floor Heating System”. If you’re planning a remodel that involves replacing the floors in your bathroom, kitchen, or even a shower, the King Floor Heating System can make you feel as though you live like … well … a king! It’s not so much for room heat as it is to simply make the floors nice and comfy in even the coldest weather.
The simple wire grid rolls out and you finishing your flooring right over the top of it. It’s very low voltage so it has minimal effect on your electric bill and it’s completely safe. Because it has no moving parts, it’s extremely durable as well.
Ask about the King Floor Heating System when you stop by the store. You’ll have the toastiest toes in town!
Roof Vents and Keeping Your Attic Cool
Bring on the summer heat! Yeah, that’s when we’re out having fun. Of course, it’s not much fun for your attic. It gets really hot up there. More than you probably ever imagined. One of the simplest, yet most effective, things you can do to keep your home cool in the summer is with proper roof ventilation. The more you keep the super hot air out of your attic the less work your insulation, air conditioning, or fans have to do to keep the living space livable.
Here are some of your options:
1. Hard-wired attic fans; probably the most effective means of keeping the hot air out. When the attic hits a certain temperature, the fans kick on and blow the hot air out. As long as you’ve got power, they should work as promised.
2. Solar attic fans; these get better and better as the years go by and solar technology improves. They don’t use any electricity that you pay for and it works most reliably during the time of year when you really need them most … hot weather!
3. Good old-fashioned Whirlybirds; these you’ve seen around for years. They spin like a pinwheel. They are part solar-powered and part wind- powered. If a breeze blows, they spin. If it gets too hot in your attic, the rising hot air makes them spin. They do their job with very little chance of failure.
One thing about attic vents you may not have considered; they aren’t just for getting rid of hot air in the summer. Good attic ventilation can prevent unwanted condensation in the winter and even prevent ice build up in freezing weather. So no matter what time of year it is, it’s a good idea to have proper roof ventilation. That being said, there’s no better time of year to do your roof ventilation work than right now. Come on in. We’ll show you how!
